Message: Hello Ric and site fans,

Just saw your posted pix from St. Michael's H.S. and the St. Pat's parade marchers from the school, the gym pix, etc. Here's what I can tell you as my mother (1928), my sister (1962) and me (1967) all were St. Mike's grads. The parade pix show the school band, the twirlers team (the one with the very cute little boy--probably someone's little brother, like the girl pictured, they decided to dress up like a leprechaun or mascot--and some students and parents club members, faculty, administrators, also in the march. Don't think that parishioners marched. My sister marched for 3 out of 4 years and my mom and I went over to watch. She advised us they would come along "toward the back end of the parade, almost before the DSNY sweepers!" Sometimes, they got better placement, between the Irish counties/societies' marchers. In those years, the parade was televised on WPIX-11, so we'd be prepared to see the band ID-ed by Jack McCarthy on camera anywhere between 3-4 PM, when the parade came to an end, with start time at 11 am. A very long parade.

As for the gym photos, I would say they date around the same time as the inside school yearbook photos--late 50s, judging by the old jumper uniforms before the plaid skirt and blazers came in for my years. My sister wore the jumper. The girls in formation in the middle of the gym looks like opposing basketball teams' cheerleading or booster squads--we played Catholic girls' schools only from Bklyn or Queens. The nuns in black seated on the other side from our Dominican nuns in white, perhaps were St. Joseph order, but I'm not sure. The seated girls look like from the other school, see girl in plaid skirt. Our basketball games were always well attended at home, and pretty good when our team went away, too. Note the windows on top, on Liberty Ave. side of gym--many, many people would stop at the open windows to look in and down at the action on the floor, because they heard the raucous shouting, screaming and applause coming from the crowd responding to baskets dunked by our team or foul shots made that we needed to win.

The St. Rita Youth Center was built and dedicated during my latter years as a student there. It was supposed to be for the youth of the community, to prevent hanging out on the streets or in the park, but sadly, never achieved that goal. In later years I was still living in the nabe and a parishioner, it was used as a gym for the grammar school and phys ed, and the lower level was used for parish meetings, and sometimes for Ma**, or for the students' and parishioners after-church breakfasts on Sundays, holidays, dinners, too, and many bazaar activities. Biggest use was for parish support via Bingo, held a few times a week, evenings and Saturday daytimes. When my son attended St. Rita's grammar school, the second time I lived in the nabe again during the late 1970s thru 1992, the Youth Center was used for after-school activities until 6 PM each weekday for the working parents of St. Rita's students. Keep up the great work with this site, and congrats on your new book.

Message: My mother grew up in the Cypress Hills area Etna and Hemlock Streets. She was one of 7 Maikowski's. Her sister married a Kreckel who raised her family there. My mom's good friend was Alice Radke. I will see if I can locate some old photos. Great project!

Message: My aunt and uncle Lottie and Eddy Kilchewski lived at 171 Ashford St. I have fond memories of summers there when the Bungalo Bar and "ride man" came around. I remember and Christine and Tina next door. My uncle was born in the house (early 20's) so I may have some very early photos. His parents (from Poland) owned the home. I was sorry to see it sold.
