Message: I lived on Elton St between Altantic Ave and Fulton. I attended St Rita's in the late 60s and and early 70s. My favorite teacher at St Rita's was Sister Theresa. She was one of the kindest Nuns I have ever known. My fondest memories of ENY were summers spent at Cypress Hills Pool. I remember hoping on the 'J' train a couple of stops and seeing the Pool from the train as it pulled into the station. Those were the days when kids played outside from morning till evening and everyone in the neighborhood knew your name.

Message: In all of the messages that have been posted here, I have not seen a single one on the "Crystal Room" on Crescent st. I was a kid then but it seemed like a rough spot, and I think one of the Longs got shot in there. Is this true? What is there now? It was next to the Post office.

Message: Speaking of local doctors how many of you recall Dr. Silleo on Norwood Avenue off the corner of Jamaica. I remember him well short stout Italian man, mostly bald, with gray on the side wore gla**es, always with a serious exterior but gentle persona. He knew his medical stuff. I remember when I had a bad case of the Flu in the mid 60's he would lite up the portable burner to sterlize his needles for penicillin injections. I remember the sulfur smell of the burner and recall the water boiling in a little pot which the needles were in. He told me to drop your draws and would give me the injection in the butt. It hurt but you know what that stuff worked and fever broke within hours....you don't get that effective treatment anymore...Then he would follow up with a house call to check on you. He would come to the house if you were too sick to come to his office...Dr Gillman was the sameway on Crescent Street. Medical practice of a bygone era...you were a person than not just a patient.....

Message: Dr. Catapano, to me was a great doctor, WhenI was very young I had something growing in my ear. and he sent me to a specialist. The specialist wanted to do surgery, but He said he will not let them do surgery until he tried something first. He came to my house 3x a day and would give me a needle. Whatever it was disappeared. He would make house calls at 3 in the morning, have coffee over our house. Just a great man. My mom used to call him GOD.
I also remember the back room next to the stairway on the left side and looking out to the yard from that room. The tv room (waiting room ) all watching tv on that little tv. and the pocket doors to the waiting room. All was made in beautiful wood and so shinny. Dr. Catapano REST IN PEACE.!!!

Message: Dr. Catapano's home and office were EXACTLY as described in the earlier post from David.
I remember he had a plastic human body with different colored organs. It was in the corner and it spooked me when I was a kid.
His wife's name was Neva and she did everything.
He made house calls too - at night! I ran away from him more than once in our house on Liberty Ave. when he pulled the "needle" out of his black bag and tried to give me a shot. He was a great guy with a little mustache and a gruff exterior but a terrific personality. I wonder how many of us he treated in all those years.

Message: Hello Everyone,
For those of you who attended St. Malachy's church, located on Van Siclen Street between Atlantic and Fulton Avenue, for one reason or another, it's doors will close for good this coming September '08. That little church is well over 150 years old and its walls have just about given up.I did my first communion and confirmation there.
