Valerie Hehl Traverson sent me this website and I have spent hours looking at pictures and messages from names that I recognize. I was born on Logan and Pitkin in 1954 and moved to Ridgewood and Elton when I was five. I went to St. Michaels graduated 68 and FKL cla** of 72. Someone named Phil was asking about my dad Joe known better as Bugzy in those days! You may also have known my mom Catherine Conklin and her sister Patricia who married Jimmy Gra**elino. I saw a picture you posted on Warwick Street with many names I recognize that my mom and dad talked about when they hung out in the fifties. Sadly my dad mom and Uncle Jimmy have pa**ed away I know they would have loved looking at this website. I also recognized names of people I hung out with on Cleveland Street. Joe Perrone when you mentioned your nickname I realized it might have been the same person. I was frieds with Enza Calmi Maryellen Alvino Pat Affico also I knew Mike Olnick went to his wedding I think you were in the wedding party. Some crazy times back then still glad to see some of us are still alive to talk about it.LOL! If anyone remembers me my family or Valerie drop me a line. Love to all especially the master of this site. |

Date: Tue 02/19/08 1:37PM From: Dom Email: domost@libero.it Message: Brooklyn Street Sports! Man, do those game bring back memories! The way I remember them ... Skelzie was great! One of my favorite tops were the gla** rings made from bottles. You had to scrape the bottle's top while turning it on a sewer . The top ring would just pop off and it was very fast and precise but had no power against the heavier, wax filled bottle caps. Wiffle ball (the white plastic ball with holes) - we played on intersections using the 4 corners as a baseball field. Stick Ball - What's there to say? Usually somebody brought out an old broom stick and we all chipped in to buy a Pensy Pinky rubber ball. No pitcher was needed, you just had to be good in coordination. On Shepherd Ave (near Arlington) I got to hit some good shots reaching the "EL" on Fulton Street! Stoop ball - You had to stand outta the gate and pitch tha ball on a stoop. 5 points if the ball bounced, ten if you caught it on the fly and 100 if you hit a step on it's point and 500 on the top step's point! Touch Football - Tactics was everything 'cause as soon as you were touched (it had to be with BOTH hands) you were down. Street Hockey - The puck was a roll of black electric tape and almost everybody had skates tightened on their sneakers with a skate key. Only the few lucky ones has skating shoes. |

I do now recall that you would make these crazy calls and the people on the one side would have to do whatever the "it" person said. Also, to Kevin Gillen, my brothers Dave and Frank played quite a bit of roller hockey as well. I remember one day Dave came home full of blood because the puck hit him right in the face! You guys were brave. |

Date: Mon 02/18/08 12:04PM From: Tom Email: tomcornsnake@yahoo.com Message: And still another trip down memory lane: I remember when it snowed we use to go to the hills on Conduit Blvd. and Atlantic ave. Right across the street from ENY Vocational H.S. If you went down one side of the hills it was a long safe ride. If you choose to go down the other side it was Fast and dangerous. You would cross over Conduit Blvd. and crash into the wall of the baseball field of the ENY H.S. We all did some stupid things then.We were young and indestructable. |
