Date: Tue 01/29/08 9:20AM From: Phil Aguece Email: philagu@yahoo.com Message: Frank, I learned the game from a few guys in the neighborhood in the early 50's and they called it Skellie without the "Z". I lived on Esses St. also, between Pitkin and Glemore Avenue's. So, for the past 50+ years it has been Skellie but whatever it's called it was fun and it didn't even cost a single penny to play. Years ago I showed my kids how to play and they did so for a few days and never tried it again. So much for today's children but it's not really their fault. We, on the other hand had very few other options except games played in the streets. Phil |

To Matt, Your comments gave me a good chuckle! LOL. I'm only 42 and grew up on Ess** St in the 70's. but I guess we're all not as young as we used to be. I still would like to hear more from people older than me to settle a long running argument of the REAL ENY name for it. |

I know I didn't invent it so who am I to argue. You sound like one of the real oldtimers from East New York. How old were you when fire was invented? Just kidding |

We called it Skelzie. There was definately a "Z" in it. I have no idea where the name came from or where it was derived. All's I know we spent hours playing it.I have 2 children and live on Long Island. When my kids were small, I taught my kids and their friends how to play it. They loved it... Who knows what the true spelling is. I guess in certain neighborhoods it was pronounced differently. As I stated I know it as Skelzie. |
