Date: Sun 01/20/08 9:32AM From: matt wasilefsky Email: mattwasilefsky@cox.net Message: I remember playing baseball on Crescent street between Fulton and Ridgewoodwith Vinny Greco who lived on Ridgewood Ave. There was a garage and we would pitch the ball against the wall and the batter would hit it. Does anyone remember what that garage was for. I remember an old guy there named Buck who was very friendly and would give kids money for ice cream from time to time. I also recall the Alcinos they owned the corner candy store on Ridgewood and Crescent and they also owned that entire building which have a few apartments. The owner had a gla** eye and story was he was a former boxer. His name was tony I think. The kids names were Anthony, Joseph and Susan I think. I still remember reaching into that soda cooler with all the ice around it and puling out a Mission soda. To this day this is still the coldest soda you could get. The cooler had a bottle cap opened on the side and when you opened the soda the cap fell into a holding tray or something. We would ask the owner from time to time if we could have the bottle caps and we would use them for skelly. We use to fill the caps with melted crayon or wax to give the cap more weight so that when you hit the oponents cap you sent it flying. I remember one kid got the idea to melt some metel in the cap. I think it was lead. Anyhow everytime he hit the cap with his finger it stung. Anyone out there remember these times and people. Anyone that played skelly I am sure remembers all the dameage to there fingers and nails from hitting the caps. |
