Date: Tue 12/31/13 2:52PM From: Judy Gallagher Close Email: jclose1@nyc.rr.com Message: Happy New Year and Good Health to all here. People are still displaying Christmas lights in ENY and Cypress Hills, though now, the neighborhoods have a lot more non-Christians. Don't know about the mechanical elves, though. Don't know the name of the deli near Thayer's Bakery on Fulton Street near Warwick, but I do remember they used to sell an ice cream pop I craved as a kid of the 1950s--Clarabelle bars--round, chocolate covered banana and raspberry ice cream bars on a stick--yum. As for Raacke's Ice Cream Parlor, I went back to see for myself sometime in the early 1990s when I visited the Arlington Library (still one of the most beautiful Carnegie libraries in all NYC) and Raacke's had become a ladies' clothing shop, though the owner had kept a lot of the old woodwork intact. By now, I'm sure it's evolved into another store. Hi again, Jim White formerly of Linwood St., like me: just wanted you to know that St. Mike's Grammar School is still open, only now known as Salve Regina Academy. It combined the students from surrounding area grammar schools: St. Malachy's, St. Rita's, St. Sylvester's in City Line, perhaps St. Gabriel's and St. Fortunata's, too. The only other Cypress Hills grammar school that survives is Blessed Sacrament on Euclid Ave. St. Michael's parish is still going strong and the priests there now are from Argentina (the old Capuchin priests and brothers were all transferred out of there and sent to the Yonkers friary in the early 2000s). St. Rita's graduates from all years had a reunion in the gym of the former St. Michael's (where dances used to be held) a few years ago. Sister Peggy Merritt is the contact there at Salve Regina for any future reunion news. There also was Heise's Ice Cream Parlor at Cleveland St and Fulton, and Corde's Ice Cream Parlor on Norwood and Fulton. Long's Ice Cream Parlor was past Crescent Street on Fulton (that family produced the current head of the Conservative Party of NY State, Tom Long, who is still a big influence on candidates who are selected for the Republican ticket in NYC and NYS). Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, too. It truly was a great place to grow up right through the '60s. With the way Bushwick is gentrifying, maybe there's hope for our old nabe to also come back up, yet. |

Arlene was my Aunt, Willa was my Great Aunt and I remember Bo very well. The basement area of 88 was indeed a separate living area. In fact, at one time the house had three separate living areas, one on each floor. Arlene lived in the basement, Willa lived in the middle and my Great Grandmother Anna (who we called Nukka) lived upstairs. At one point in the early 50's my Grandparents and Father also lived in that house. Thanks for the picture, I have many wonderful memories of visiting that house. |
