Date: Fri 08/24/07 3:53PM From: Tony Davenport Email: tonyd24@yahoo.com Message: Tommy Cooper, I e-mailed you this week, write back. I was looking through the pages again and started thinking of the use of "sliding pond" for what my kids and wife call a slide. Anyone remember other linguistic oddities from the neighborhood? Two that jump to mind are "Hindu" for a do-over and running to touch a wall and shouting "ham and eggs" to avoid having to chase a ball that got away. Also, thumbs down if you didn't feel like sharing your soda or candy. Anymore? |

The year was 1936. the Piels beer brewery had a big sign on the roof, of a dwarf bowling. He threw a strike every time. Sheffield ave., between Atlantic and Liberty was the scene of some terrific punch ball games. We'd play teams from Alabama,Williams, and Hinsdale atreets. All the older folks would be hanging out their windows, rooting us on.The names of some of the families on the block were the Pagillo's, Fiorillo's, Maggio's, Abbruzzo's Cecere's DiAngelo's, Shortino's and Boland's |
