I'm pretty sure the story (Henry Hill, who turned informant and is in hiding) was true. Were these guys actually operating in our neighborhood back in the day? I guess I was too young to know or to care back then. My grandfather had a hardware store on Pitkin Avenue (G. Electric Company) and my Mom said he paid protection every month, but I thought she was pulling my leg. Maybe not! Goodfellas is a great movie by the way and I would recommend it if you don't mind the violence. |

I remember the name Frank Cassano but right now I'm, not associating the name with the face. You're right Frank, by '68, just about everyone went their separate ways. I last saw Charlie Sabbatino, the Mayor in '99. He didn't change much - still the Mayor. Charlie had a pizza place in Howard Beach, closed that down and opened another place somewhere in Queens. Charlie lived two houses from me on Belmont. His father Tony (Moe) managed the Kinema for awhile and later opened a luncheoette on Pitkin near Berriman. Not long ago, I heard from Ronnie Rossi. He also went to 64. Ronnie lived on Fountain between Pitkin and Glenmore. After coming back from Nam, he settled in Maryland. I also heard from Patty Alessi. He retired from the NYFD. Richie Pallazolla, who went to ENY HS, died in an auto accident in Florida many years ago. His picture appears on the St Rita page in one of the class pictures. Crystal St. was our summer camp. There was so much activity on that street from morning to night. Lots of good times there. The empty lot on Belmont between Chestnut and Crystal was our baseball field. All the neighbors looked out for us because they were like our extended family. It was really great finding this site because you can go back in time and recall some good memories. |

This is one great sight and it has inspired me to go look for some PS64(Berriman Jr High)pictures, (went there from K to 9th)Never could figure out why they tore it down. My father went to that school and he was born in 1901. Then I went to ENY HS,.then to Nam. When I got back in 68 most everyone had gone there separate ways. I think about the old neighborhood a lot. Had some really great times there, some bad ones also but you try to block those out. Have you ever heard from Charlie S (the Mayor)? It's really great to see so many people from ENY have survived because according to today's standards we did everything wrong!! Well this has been a great trip back in time but it's time to get back to the present and see why the Grand kids are making all that noise. |
