Date: Mon 01/29/07 1:57PM From: T J Wiegand Email: nighthawk411@verizon.net Message: Hi Rick and the ENY family... Just went thru the guestbook, and the stories are fantastic! As I mentioned, I'm not from the area, but I've worked there for quite a while with NYC Transit. I've just finished reading, and enjoying, a novel called "Shepherd Avenue" by NY Post reporter Charles Carillo. It was written in 1986, and presents a vivid picture of life in ENY in the early 1960's. Mentioned are St. Rita's Church, Willie's lemon ice stand, the Cleveland St. elevated station(anyone remember when the J train was called the QJ, and before letters were used, the "Broadway-Brooklyn Local"?). Also dealt with are Italian- American home life, as well as a feast on Atlantic Ave., and a gent known as "Zip" who collects bottles and cashes them in to a fellow named Nat. The author must have been from the area. An excellent book, published by the Atlantic Monthly Press. Check your libraries for it. It was great to see close-up shots of the Swiss man and woman on the front of the old Borden's plant. In the early 60's my father repaired calculators(all mechanical and as large as typewriters), and one of his clients was Ibin Typewriters, somewhere in ENY. I know it was on a corner, possibly near Van Siclen and Atlantic... does anyone know their exact location? One of my favorite memories of the area is riding with my father along Atlantic Avenue in our '53 Olds 88, while hearing WMCA "Good Guy" Dan Daniel play "Hello Stranger" by Barbara Lewis... which, incidentaly, was on Atlantic Records. My best to you all...TJW |
