I am awaiting her answer.Angelo and Barney were very nice people. I speak to Barney's daughter all the time. I dont know what business I favorite the most, other than my uncle's. But looking back it was great to have such wonderful neighbors and loving people around us.Everyone new each other. Does anyone remember going with their father bowling on Tuesday night, with the HOLY NAME SOCIETY for St.Rita? That was only when we had no school on Weds. I remember all the kids used to go and run aound the bowling alley, playing hide and seek! |

Therese did you know that after Willie passed away his son tried to open another lemon ice stand in ozone Park but could not make a go of it, I guess it took Willie's special talents to make his ices. Angelo from Barney's was a great guy. He would save a new top or yoyo that just came into his store for my dad so I would have it. As for White Castle, well if my grandmother did not sell that property to them back then there would not have been a white Castle or Carvel. She owned both lots. She had wanted to open a car lot on each but the people did not want it so she sold the property. There were many great candy stores back then that sold penny candy and I'm sure others have there great memories that they consider number one . In my heart Junky Joe's and the fish store will always hold number one in my memories. |

Cant forget Lorenzo's and what about Brenners Drugs. Does anyone remember the penny candy store down on Ridgewood Ave.? Ladies name was Frances. Go in with 10cents and come how with a bag full of candy. Does anyone remember Tom's grocery store on Ridgewood Ave.? I really do think WHITE CASTLE would make the number 1 memory!! OH! and the YMCA, AND OF COURSE, who didnt have fun in the park? Great times, with great people.. |

I wonder when they opened their stores, if they knew just how famous they would be in the eyes of the children that walked into their shops each day holding the hands of their parents. They must be smiling knowing they did well in helping us to have such fond memories of Brooklyn. I'm sure if we can go back in time we would want them there with us. We can only share these memories with our kids today but they would never fully understand just how great it was back then. It's kinda sad to think that they think they have it all but in reality they have nothing compare to what we had. Not to mention just how safe things were back then. |
