Date: Fri 12/22/06 3:12PM From: Joey DiPrima Email: Joepar44@yahoo.com Message: To Danny Ferraro: Danny, I think I remember you from the old neighborhood. Did you play for a baseball team, the Jr. Vets? We played at both Highland and Euclid Parks. I pitched for them and usually got shelled pretty good. Vinny Oddo was the catcher and Ritchie Trampas who hung out at F&P also was on that team. Willie Logiacco was the manager.I lived on Belmont between Crystal and Chestnut - graduated from St. Rita's in 58. I worked at Frank's Grocery on Pitkin and Chestnut and the later for Levy's Pharmacy. Some of the names you mentioned, Frank Iovino and Frankie Failla are familiar to me. I might have went to St.Rita's with them. Some of the guys that I hung out with were Ronnie Rossi, Pat Alessi, Richie Palazolla, Donny Becker(Pappas), Charlie Sabatino and Matty Schultz. Happy Holidays to you and everyone on this great site. |

Date: Wed 12/20/06 9:15AM From: Stewart Meyer Email: xspecs@aol.com Message: I was born in Beth El hospital on Linden Blvd in 1947, spent first decade on Dumont Avenue at Miller Avenue, right across from the park. I am a novelist (Grove Press, Serpents Tail) and am considering setting a novel in East New York. Particularly interested in a section of City Line locally known as 'The Canyon' or 'The Hole,' which contains an unpaved section of Dumont Avenue, and horse stables. Any info on 'The Canyon' would be appreciated. |

Date: Tue 12/19/06 6:44PM From: Harvey Rubin Email: oldpens2004@yahoo.com Message: Great site! Thanks to Rick Gomes for referring it to me after seeing my posting at another nostalgic Brooklyn site. We (father, mother, brother) lived at my grandmother's house at 412 Barbey Street, between Pitkin and Belmont, until approximately 1953 when we moved way out to Flushing. Many of the photos at your site are of places within a block of that house. I can certainly remember the el, the Borden plant on Atlantic and Barbey, pushcarts on Belmont or Blake, the trolley on Sutter. I went to PS 158 until 4th grade, when I went to PS 108 (special program for the "gifted", taking the Pitkin Ave. el to Broadway Junction, and transferring to the Myrtle or Fulton to Crescent Street. I recall my mother attended JHS 149 and Thomas Jefferson HS. I may be able to dig up some old photos from those days, which I will scan and email to you. I also regularly visit www.nycsubway.org, which has great Brooklyn photos, focused on buses, trains, and trolleys. In fact, my computer "wallpaper" is a color shot of the Pitkin Ave. el, probably in the vicinity of Van Siclen Ave., I think just a block from Barbey. Hope to be a regular visitor to the site. |
