Message: Hi, Jim White!

I haven't checked this site in more than one year, but did today because I wanted to see if anyone wrote about St. Rita's School reunion last Sunday. Then I saw your posts, mentioning my name!

Didn't know you knew my name or even noticed me on the block. My sister was a good friend of the Dooleys, and Bill Dooley in your house and you were a few years older than I, growing up. Sadly, Bill pa**ed away in his early 50s, I think; he had been a NYS trooper. If you also knew his cousin, young Jim Dooley in the apt. house a few doors away from your house, he also pa**ed on, out in Arizona, I believe. I always wondered why you didn't seem to hang out on our block. Didn't know much about you, except that to me, you were an older guy, who seemed very nice. By a weird chance, I saw you at St. Elizabeth's Church some years back at the wedding of your daughter...my friend's mother knew Mrs. Galante from her senior center and heard her granddaughter was getting married and that her daughter, Mary Ann, had married you, from Linwood Street. She wanted to go see the wedding, so I drove her there and we also saw Joanne Dooley outside and spoke to her. You looked very elegant that day and very happy. I'm glad I went. Hope you are well these days. Thanks for trip down memory lane by mentioning all those stores; my mom was Herb's customer, he gave me many free pieces of baloney when I was a kid, and later did the same for my son. We went to that German deli, among others in the nabe. Remember the German Bakery on Fulton & Warwick? The appliance store on corner of Fulton & Linwood was Ara's. Remember Gruber's hardware store and Ciniglio's Pharmacy with the phone booths and the step-on scale? It later became Caracappa's pharmacy? You must remember Junky Joe's and Sara's Plastic Place and Sid's candy store. How about Gold's Jeweler's? Bill and Betty's Grocery store on Arlington Ave.? Or Bettypaul's store on Elton & Fulton?

It was a really great neighborhood to grow up in...sadly, I had to witness for awhile, what it became in the '80s before I moved out permanently from Linwood St. Haven't been back much since, except for last Sunday's reunion which took place at St. Michael's old high school. St. Rita's School closed, along with many others in the area, now combined into one school, known as Salve Regina on Jerome Street.

Enjoy the photos on this site--they're a treasure trove and please keep in touch. This site has brought me back in touch with people from my childhood and teen years so many times. I hope it does the same for you, Jim.

Message: Been a while since I've been here. I hpe you're all doing well.

I was checking out the new Norwood Ave. pics. I went to Edison and took the J for 4 years, great pics.

I was wondering if anyone remembers when there was a big chain of explosions on Norwood? If I remember correctly, there was a gas leak and a short circuit made all the sewer caps blow up along with some store windows on the corner of Fulton.
