Date: Thu 08/2/12 10:13AM From: Jim White Email: james.j.white@mssb.com Message: Just spent an hour reading all the great posts. The only name that popped out at me was Judy Gallagher of Linwoood St between Atlantic and Fulton. I moved to 280 in 1956 from Jerome St where I attended Saint Michael's, so all my friends were from Jerome St, Warwick and Barbey, which is why I never hung out on Linwood. I did become friends with Billy Dooley who lived on the second floor of 280. We lived on the third and the Prisco's on the first (they were the owners). After St. Michael's I went to Richmond Hill instead of K. Lane, so again I did not go to school with anyone from the block. I did work for Herb the butcher on Fulton Street for a few years as the deliver boy. My friend Vinny Winters worked next door at Tony's Deli. Both stores were across from Charlie Wilder's. I remember Moe's Bar on the corner of Cleveland and Heisses Ice Cream Parlor across the St by the steps to the El. There was the Kodak carema store and a great German deli. The Walsh family lived above the deli. |

Date: Tue 07/31/12 2:27PM From: Jim White Email: james.j.white@mssb.com Message: What a joy reading through all the wonderful nostalgia. Sorry to say that only one name popped out at me and that was Judy Gallagher from Linwood St between Atlantic and Fulton. I moved to 280 in 1957 having spent my first 10 years on Jerome St and attended Saint Michael's,so all my friends were were west of Cleveland St, mostly on Jerome, Warwick and Barbey which explains why I never really spent much time getting to know the folks on Linwood. Billy Dooley lived at 280 also, on the second floor, the Prisco's owned the building, we lived on the third floor,so he was really the only kid I hung out with. I remember MOE'S BAR and HEISSES' ICE CREAM PARLOR across the street. The EMBASSY and KINEMA theatres, the APPLIANCE STORE on the corner of Fulton and Linwood that had a LAY AWAY PLAN - no credit! I was the delivery boy for HERB THE BUTCHER on Saturdays for two years. My frined Vinny Winters was the delivery boy for TONY'S GROCERY nexy door. We both belonged to the SQUIRES, junior Knights of Columbus, along with Larry Ceparano, David Evers, John Manning, John Walsh and Arthur Kirns. Keep in touch. |
