Date: Sun 07/25/10 7:39PM From: Roger Ski Gapinski Email: ski@gapinski.net Message: I'm going to start as they did in the original "My Brooklyn." My Brooklyn is Cypress Hills. 554 Ridgewood Avenue between Nichols Avenue and Grant Avenue. Was born at Wykoff Heights Hospital and lived on Ridgewood Avenue until I went in the US Navy. I went to P.S. 171 - K-9, then TA Edison HS out in Jamaica. Favorite spots were Long's ice cream parlor, Jack's (Jocks) Pizza, Hales (or Lucky Strike) Bowling Alley (Atlantic Ave.), Emba**y movie, another pizza place between Autumn and Hemlock on Fulton St. Went to Blessed Sacrament, remember Wednesday confraternity dances? Playing, sleigh riding, "camping," ringalevio, etc. in the cemetary on Jamaica Avenue. Cypress pool, Highland Park. Snake Hill, YMCA, "The Square" - Rockaway Blvd and Elderts Lane, PS 171 school yard, Forest Park, Rockaway Beach and all the various food/candy places on Fulton St. between Elderts Lane and Euclid Avenue. The 1964 World's Fair - that was something! Good bargains at "The Red & White Building" - Bargain Town, Delancy St. on Sunday mornings and 5&10 Tilottie's. Delicious egg creams, meatball heros, pizza by the slice, Italian ices, bagels, kaiser rolls, etc., etc., etc. I could probably go on and on. Maybe in another post. Contact me by email. |
