Date: Thu 01/28/10 3:52PM From: Dom Most Email: domost@libero.it Message: It's this time of year (winter) that I remember Highland Park the most. Snow. Swooping down the center hill onto the the baseball/football field on my Flexible Flyer sled, jumping over the small hump that (I think) served as a form of natural bleachers or maybe even building up the courage to go down "Snake Hill" all the way from atop the reservoir sidewalk down to Jamaica Ave.! Or even the nights when I took my dog Butch for a walk among the trees that glistened with their icy branches in the white park lights. A magic part of Brooklyn that is always within me. |

I lived on Hendrix Street and our school and church was St. Malachy's, which closed down last year after 154 years! Anyway, My older sister graduated from St. Michaels in 1975, her name is Gina Zambrano, wondering if you two ran into each other. Mario Zambrano |

The apartments we lived in had 4 apartments and a store front as well. As I recall our apartment had a barber shop store front the barbers name was Willie. Also, up the block on Ridgewood was a candy store owned buy the Alcino family. The story was the owner was a retired boxer and he had a gla** eye. When you paid him for your purchase he looked at you and it was pretty scarry. I remember that Chinese restuarant you would walk up the long flight of creeky stairs to the second floor. Does anyone remember any of these characters. Does anyone remember going to the corner drug store on Fulton and bringing your television tubes to the tube tester to find out if they were working or not. |
