Date: Thu 10/22/09 9:38AM From: Gerry Carter Email: cart49@comcast.net Message: I found the result from the Golden Gloves Archive. The finals were held on February 16, 1959 @ Madison Square Garden. Gallagher knock out (Ref Stops Contest) Dennis Kelly 2:07 of the 3rd round. Here is the posted reults: 147 Novice: Thomas Gallagher, Unattached Defeated Dennis Kelly, Duncan Center PAL (RSC-3; 2:07) I was ten years old at the time. Tom Gallagher lived 5 houses from me on Jamaica Avenue between Logan & Norwood. I remember it as it was yesterday. It seemed like the partying did not end for a week. It was great for the area. Tom Gallagher was like a folk hero. At least to kids on our block. |

He knocked out Dennis Kelly of Woodside, Queens; I believe the 3rd round. He was the only person from the neighborhood, I know of, who won the Golden Gloves. For years I use to pa** the grocery store on Jamaica & Norwood and see the New York Daily News article of the fight in their window. It showed Tom Gallagher standing over Dennis Kelly and the Ref counting Dennis Kelly out. His win was great for the neighborhood. Now I found out from the Daily News that these pictures are availble on line. We should look into the pictures & have them posted at this site. |
