This card provides the backdrop for our headers. The Schenck house is visible at the front of the park, and landmarks like P.S. 108 and The Ridgewood Pumping Station are visible in the background.

Note the lack of trees along Highland Boulevard where it comes down to Jamaica Ave. Some other interesting elements; The YMCA is not there yet, that is the Rapelye House sitting on that corner. There are trees sitting in the "outfield" of the ballfield. Many thanks to fellow Brooklyn collector Ike for that scan.

A similar view, a little different angle, and it raises the question: what are those poles lining Highland Boulevard?.

I've posted a better scan of the old card. You can see the outlines of clay tennis courts on the right. The pavilion in the background was originally a clubhouse for those in the tennis club. Eventually it was converted to a park pavilion, with restrooms, first aid, and a concession stand. Judy Close adds; "The pavilion in the photos that used to be the old tennis club in my youth ca. 1950s, was called commonly, "the Rain House" because while still standing, it was boarded up, and if it began to rain while strolling in the park, people took shelter there." Ronnie Amerise confirmed for us the original pavilion had showers, lockers, and restrooms for the tennis players, but was closed by the time he started working at the park in 1956. It was demolished in 1957 due to vandalism.

Every school kid remembers the maypole celebrations at Highland Park. They apparently have a long history, as the postcard on the left is from 1915.

We now swing over to the western side of Highland Boulevard. I had the tank in the distance misidentified for some time; the tank you see was located south of Atlantic between Cleveland and Ashford and belonged to Brooklyn Union Gas. Given the sightline, that must be P.S. 64 in the distance. Thanks to Anthony Messina for spotting that. For the rest of the orientation of these postcards, you can include the one below as a group of three and reference the Local Live image below. The house with the turret still stands on Barbey and Sunnyside and is circled and labeled "A" in the Local live shot.

I believe the path in the foreground of this shot leads up to the house pictured above. This view, looking east, shows the houses on the northern side. The one on the far left is still standing and is labelled as "B" in the Local Live shot. I actually think most of those houses on the north side are still standing; the few towers and turrets that are visible seem to match those of the 2006 shot. The south side is a different story; all those houses appear to be gone. Even the stone steps that lead up to the tudor style house no longer exist.

Cobblestone Bridge and Wading Pond

Wading Pond in Highland Park, East New York
Dated: 1925 Maker:Commercial Art Post Card Co. Status:Own (RG)

This card was postmarked 1925, but 1924 aerial images do not show a pond in the park. It's not clear if the pond existed for only a short time, or if the pond only had water intermmitently.

Flower Gardens
In the early days of the park, there was a area devoted to flowers. I believe the gardens were disbanded in the 1930s remodeling of the park during the WPA work projects. I have added an aerial view to show the location within the park.

Well there was water at one point somewhere. This lake or pond existed in the early years of the park, I believe the garden was abandoned when the park was re-designed during the WPA work projects in the 1930s.

Banzer Park

Banzer Park
Pronounced 'Bahn-zer', I was informed by June Marmo, whose mother used to visit the park. In those days people used to 'dress to the nines' on a Sunday and head to the park to hear live concert music,go boating in the lake, and enjoy the outdoors. Dom DiFiglia, whose wife is a Banzer descendant, tipped me off that the Brooklyn Geneology site had a map that identified the location of Joseph Banzer's house. That gives us a pretty good idea of the park location.

Highland Park, Jamaica Ave.
Maker: J. Shinske Dated: 1911 Status:Own(BG)
I have had trouble placing this image. The reference to Jamaica Ave. made me think it was the lower park but I believe I see the stone arch bridge and the pavilion in the background of that shot so I believe it is a view in the Upper Park.

An Old Landmark in Highland Park
Maker: Unk Dated : 1908 Status: Need
I don't have the location of either of these shots pinpointed. Its the only reference I've seen to a 'promenade' and I'm guessing the Upper Park with flower garden and pavilion would be the more likely area. Only that obscured house in the background of the other card gives us any clue to location.

That appears to be the reservoir in the background, so I included this photo in "Upper" HP.

This postcard gives a better view of the fence. Technically this fence is strap iron, built by the Hecla Company. The very first fence around the original reservoir bays were in fact wrought iron.
