Ridgewood Ave. Special

This special comes courtesy of Therese Panariello, who helped start this page awhile back with a bunch of photos of her block between Shepherd and Highland Place.

135 Ridgewood Avenue, 1908
Rick Constant noted his great grandparents lived at 135 Ridgewood Avenue, and supplied this fantastic early photo from the family album, dating to about 1908. The house still stands today, seen on the right.
Rick also supplied this winter scene of Ridgewood Avenue around the same time (1908.) There is little for us to use to determine the orientation. My guess is that the view is west toward Linwood Street; the only visible porch appears to belong to the one that sits on the southwest corner, pictured on the right in 2008.
I've squeezed in these pics to start from Essex Street. Dee Gordon sent in these shots from 1963 with the corner in the background. Both views are looking east, with "My Fair Lady Hairstylists" (northeast corner) and Brenner's in view. Pictured are: Susan Rogers Nolan, Dee Gordon, Donna Gordon, Mickey Rogers, Cathie Donovan, Debbie Gordon, Eddie Donovan. On the right, the Gordon sisters.
177 Ridgewood Ave.
We're starting with two shots of Therese's house from the early 70s. The house sits on the north side of the block.
Ridgewood Ave.
Next, we have two views from the front of her house probably around 1970. The first is west towards Shepherd, and the second is east towards Highland Place.
Ridgewood Ave.2007
A couple of 2007 update shots for comparison of 177 Ridgewood and the view east towards Highland Place.
Anniversary Parades
These two shots come from my Brooklyn Anniversary Parade collection. On the left, from 1966 is a view east down Therese's block towards Highland Place. At this time the house is reddish brown with a red and white striped awning. Therese identified her mother, grandmother and aunt watching the parade. The parade doubled back from Richmond Ave. which is why the marchers are passing each other. On the far right with backs to the camera are my aunt and my mother pushing the carraige. The shot on the right is from 1967 and is already on the Parades page; it is the opposite view west towards Shepherd.
Therese had parade pictures as well, these are probably circa 1970. These two shots are looking west back towards Shepherd.
The brick building in the background of those shots on the corner of Shepherd and Ridgewood is 166 Ridgewood, seen in the background of this 1967 parade shot from my family album. Tony (Catti) Rappa used to live here, and she even identified her Aunt Angelina and Uncle Lenny sitting on the stoop watching the parade!
Additional parade pics from Therese, these are looking almost directly across from 177 Ridgewood.
Since I do not have any update photos yet I have grabbed Local Live aerial images of the north side of the block on the left and the south side of the block on the right.
Views east; a 1966 communion photo and a 1975 shot of her father off the corner of Highland Place.
Moving east, these 1967 parade shots show the north side of Ridgewood Ave. between Highland Place and Hale and the south side pictured on the right.
Continuing east, these 1966 parade shots show the north side of Ridgewood Ave where Force Tube crosses over and intersects Norwood Ave.
We will actually finish this series with a question. On the left is a shot of the 1967 Parade. We know "Southwestern Arms" sat on the northeast corner of Logan and Ridgewood. The brownstones in the distance line the north side of Ridgewood up to Richmond Street. On the right, that 1966 parade picture was identified as being near Hale, but I think it is actually the north side of Ridgewood west of Richmond St. Anybody recognize it for sure? Wes Miller has now identified the view as looking east off the corner of Norwood and Ridgewood.
I haven't grabbed an update photo for this 1908 RPPC because the buildings really haven't changed! The location is the south side of Ridgewoood Avenue, just west of Logan Street.
Ridgewood Avenue
The view is east in both these cards. The El running along Crescent Street is visible in the distance and looks deceptively close. The view in the card on the left is towards Richmond Street, on the right is one block further east, to Chestnut.
Ridgewood Avenue east to Chestnut today
Google streetview for some reason does not have the block between Logan and Ridgewood, but here is the view looking east towards Chestnut today.
