June 2008 Updates
I'm way behind, thanks to several road trips. This entire update came from Leonora (Lee) Licata, whose parents also came from East New York. I have already put the images out to their respective locations, but have copied them here in chronological order to make them easy to find. The text may read a little odd since they are in the context of their respective pages. |

Leonora Licata sent over these shots of Logan Street
south of Atlantic. The first shot is her aunt Gussie in the mid 1940s, standing next to the stoop at 356 Logan. Some houses on the east side of Logan are visible in the background and Leonora reminds us that Diana Coal sat up on the northeast corner. On the right is her mother and grandmother circa 1946, standing next to the house. Lee recalls the house was near the corner of Liberty, with a gas station on the corner and a chicken market behind their house
which faced Liberty Avenue. |
This view is across Logan. The shot is from 1949 and shows Leonora's grandmother and Aunt Rosina (Lee notes she used to make costumes for the Rockettes!). In the background is the Arena granite carving company, makers of headstones. |
| Elton and Fulton St. From Leonora Licata, the shot on the left is the southeast corner of Elton and Fulton taken circa 1951. She IDs left to her right her mother Francesca, cousin Benjamin (Sonny), and his mother , her aunt Philomena. (Of course little Leonora in front). On the right, the view is south down Elton
towards Atlantic, also around 1951. She is with her cousin Pauline L'Bassi. |

Kindergarten Graduation, 1955. Leonora Licata sent over a wealth of pictures, starting with these 1955
kindergarten graduation shots. The first is inside the auditorium, and the second is outside
the auditorium with her cousin Pauline Palladino. |
Leonora also sent this
shot from the 1955 graduation, taken at what we believe is the side entrance by the school. |
From Leonora Licata, this is a shot of her at the old church as a flower girl for her cousin Pauline's wedding on April 30, 1955. |

Logan Arms The next building down from the clubhouse was the Logan Arms, at 59 Logan. Lee Licata sent a
1957 communion picture taken in front of the building, as well as an interior shot
of the Greek Key tile flooring in the lobby.

Leonora Licata explains she did not get "the calling" in 1958; "The nuns dressed me up as a nun for the play - the Life of St. Bernadette of Lourdes. The nun in the middle is Sister James Margaret; she was my teacher in 3rd and 4th grades. I don't remember who the other nun was. I was in 3rd grade at the time; so, I must have been 9 and this was 1958! This is the hallway of Blessed Sacrament School, the first floor, in front of the statue of Saint Joseph. They may have moved that statue long since..". On the right, from her sister Carmen's first communion 1960. |

Wedding, Jan. 21, 1978 From Leonora Licata ;"This was my wedding day, January 21, 1978. On January 19, 1978, we had 19 inches of snow in NYC. Here we are freezing on the steps of Blessed Sacrament Church, from left: Margaret R. Giugliano, my best female friend; Carmen Ann Licata, my sister; me; William J. Marano, my husband; Eugene Marano, his brother (an Idaho State Supreme Court Judge,) and Anthony L. Mosca." |
Baptism, 1979 Also from Leonora, the baptism of her son Mario in May 1979. She is holding Mario in front of the rectory in the shot on the left. The stained glass windows visible in the interior shot are The Annuciation and The Visitation. |
Wedding, 1981 Leonora sent these shots of her sister Carmen's wedding on July 18, 1981. Her father, Mario C. Licata, is pictured on the right that day with a nice view of the beautiful doors to the church. |

93 Nichols Leonora Licata lived at 93 Nichols and these first two shots were more to reflect on the architecture of those houses. The first shot is from 1979 with her mother holding her son Mario, and in the background we have a view of the porches of all those attached brick Edwardian homes built in 1905. Lee notes; " The "attics" rather, crawl spaces on the top level are interconnected for several buildings. When I climbed the ladder, I could look over south to the next 3 or 4 houses - #95, 97, 99, etc." On the right, her son Mario in 1980 with a good view of the original iron fence. |
Nichols Avenue Leonora also supplied these shots with views up and down Nichols. The first is from Halloween 1980 and the second Halloween 1981. From Lee; "There was an old woman who lived in one of those blonde brick homes - Mrs. Trieling (spelling???) - she was so old, she knew Calvin Coolidge, the president, in her childhood, and referred to him as "Uncle Cal." Lee also points out the store on the corner was John's Delicatessan back in 1959. |

Wedding, St. Rita's 1979 Lee Licata sent these June 1979 shots from the wedding of Francine Giugliano including one taken by the school. |
